About our Pharmacy

Mission Statement

Individuals who complete the Residency Program at Forbes Hospital (FH) shall be highly qualified independent practitioners that demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered practice and professional leadership. They shall be highly proficient in managing medication use processes to optimize medication therapy outcomes in patients with a variety of disease states. Individuals will apply principles of evidence-based medicine within a multidisciplinary care environment. They will also exhibit leadership and practice management skills to promote the profession of pharmacy and facilitate their own professional development. They will effectively educate patients and their professional colleagues and engage in practice-related research to enhance patient care.

Forbes Hospital Department of Pharmacy

The FH Department of Pharmacy provides 24-hour comprehensive pharmacy services, utilizing a decentralized, computerized unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture programs. Technology and automation is employed to promote medication safety and efficiency.

Pharmacists assume direct patient care responsibilities for ensuring the safe and effective use of medications, in addition to supervising pharmacy support personnel. Established clinical programs allow pharmacists to automatically dose and adjust targeted medications, provide pharmacokinetic services, and participate in emergency situations at the bedside. Pharmacists with specialized training provide expertise in advanced principles of pharmaceutical care including critical care, emergency medicine, trauma, infectious diseases, internal medicine, heart failure, anticoagulation, parenteral nutrition support, and outpatient oncology.

The Department of Pharmacy provides experiential learning opportunities for multiple schools of pharmacy including Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Ohio Northern University.

Pharmacy Department Mission:

  • To improve the health of our patients by optimizing medication use and ensuring safe medication processes while providing patient-centered pharmaceutical care responsibly, professionally, and with compassion.

Pharmacy Department Vision:

  • To increase the provision of high-quality medication therapy across the continuum of care.
  • To improve medication-related patient outcomes by collaborating with all members of the health care team and providing leadership over all areas of medication use.
  • To foster an environment that promotes safe, effective, and cost-effective use of medications through innovation, use of technology, and continuous quality improvement strategies.
  • To impact the future of health care by offering professional development activities for staff and high-quality education to students and residents.

Multiple hospital medication use governance structure

There is a pharmacy-driven medication use governance structure that centralizes leadership, integrates pharmacy operations, and enhances medication safety, clinical effectiveness, process efficiency and the quality of performance across FH and nine other hospitals. The medication use governance structure is centered on the network Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee, which is composed of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, risk management, and a representative from senior health system administration.
